The Origins of the team in 1983 (By David Crow)

The origins of the team started around 1983, this was as a rugby union side filled mainly with employees from Heysham Power station, but as more players came to work at the station from traditional rugby league areas a decision was made to “give it a go” in a non-traditional rugby league area.

The first friendlies took place in 86 and I remember playing in these, my first game being Hindley borstal (obviously away) along with Bamber Bridge, Daisy Hill in Bolton and Atherton.

The decision was made to join the North West Counties the following year, our application was accepted but I remember there being some moaning at the meeting by old men from Wigan in flat caps saying “bloody Haysham, that’s miles away”, and “they won’t last long up there”.

So now we were an official rugby league club we had a ground to play on, Trimpell, we had a pub to go back to, Smugglers Den, all we needed was a crest to wear with pride on our chest. I seem to remember we had numerous meetings deciding on our identity, and looked at various “ATOM” designs but the feel was that we wanted something more to represent where we were from instead of a bloody big nuclear plant! It was from these meeting that we came up with the idea or the the old church of St Peter on the cliffs near Heysham Barrows.

I feel the new design of the crest gives the club a bit more history and a bit of a kick to the old bloke that said “they won’t last long up there” !
