Atoms bridge the gap
Bamber Bridge 22 Heysham Atoms 40
Heysham Atoms travelled to Preston on Saturday and recorded their first
league victory at Withy Park for almost four years.
Chris Fairhurst opened their account with a fine try, converted by Paul
Edmonds.
This was quickly followed by a well struck drop goal from the same trusty
boot.
Bridge came back with a spirited attack down the right wing and only a
last ditch tackle from centre Darren Walker saved the line.
A probing run from Walker broke the cover and even though his pass was
knocked down a superb pick-up from Taylor enabled him to cross under the
posts, leaving an easy kick for Edmonds.
Strong running from the Atoms' forwards gave mercurial captain Neil Fox
a chance to dart in from a quick play the ball and score the Atoms third
try, this time unconverted.
Two minutes from half time, prop Dave Crow dummied the Bamber Bridge line
and stepped his way over, Edmonds converted for a half time score of 0-23.
The home side scored a converted try almost from kick-off when they caught
the Atoms dreaming.
Bridge then started to play some attractive rugby and against the run
of play a beautifully timed pass from John Hughes put Edmonds over, but
unfortunately he did not convert his own try.
However, a towering Edmonds kick put the visitors on the attack and Hughes
put wing Andy Bradley in for a try, this time converted.
This galvanised Bamber Bridge into action and they scored twice in as
many minutes.
Heysham mounted attack after attack and the pressure paid off with a Hughes
drop goal.
A further try came when Walker put full back Johnny Graham in at the corner
for Edmonds to convert - taking his day's tally to 15 points.
Bamber Bridge are fighters and scored once more - then camped on the Atoms'
line until the final whistle.
