Atoms weather the Storm

Southport Storm 22pts vs 52pts Heysham Atoms A

North West Mens Entry League

The Atoms Development squad had an excellent victory on Saturday at Tarleton against Entry League newcomers Southport Storm. The Atoms posted 10 tries and the verdict was that their youthful attack looked full of pace and enthusiasm but they still have a lot to work on with their defensive side of the game.

Three players made their debuts with Stefano Cossutti, Jon Hobbs and Luke Charlson all impressing with their contributions to the team.

Loose Forward Mike Oldcorn got the Atoms first score when he wriggled and turned his way through a couple of defenders on only their second set of 6.Chris Helme made it 10 nil going under the posts being on the end of a 4 player passing play. Livewire hooker Phil Riley continued the opening dominance scooting away from the dummy half position to score and give the Atoms a 16 nil lead.

The Atoms had restricted Southport's 'go forward' with good line speed and contact especially through pack men Strachan and Rodriguez, until they finally got some pressure on the Atoms line after a knock on and 2 penalties had conceded field position. Their big prop forward picked up and too easily flopped over close to the posts.

Kai Davis was running strongly on the right wing but was unfortunate to get penalised for a high shot for what seemed to be a good, solid tackle. This theme continued and Chris Helme saw yellow for repeated high tackles. Michael Forrest scorched under the posts directly from a move from the scrum base.

Southport scored the last try of the half catching the Atoms defence who had clocked off wide on the left.
The opening to the second half was all about the Atoms and in this period they took away any hope of a Southport revival with a blistering spell of attacking rugby.

Jack Lawton moved into the pivot position and his extra yard of pace caused no end of problems for Southport scoring a 15 minute hat-trick. He benefited from some weak defending down the narrow side and chased hard onto a well placed Dan Helme grubber kick into the try area.

Chris Helme scored his second in an eventful performance with a 30 yard breakaway try after strong running from Pike, Shaw and Hobbs.

At 42.10 to the good the Atoms had total control of the match and when young winger Luke Charlson danced down the left touchline finishing under the posts the frustration of the Southport defenders boiled over.

Once calm had resumed Michael Forrest showed great evasion and balance to break the line on half way with no-one able to catch him. He brought up 50 points with his 6th conversion and took him to a personal tally of 20 points.
Southport finished with 2 tries scored by their speedy winger as the Atoms looked to have put the cue in the rack too little early for the coaches liking.
