Lancaster University 22pts vs 46pts Heysham Atoms A
The Heysham Atoms youngsters had an excellent victory at the weekend up at a very wintery Lancaster University. The performance was in particular pleasing with all the back line under 20 years old.
The Atoms opened the scoring within the first 10 minutes after Chris Strachan broke down the middle of the field and off loaded superbly in the tackle to Captain for the day Dan Helme who went under the posts.
The University side got into their stride and hit back almost immediately after a succession of penalties helped their field position. A try was scored wide on The Atoms left.
Matthew Humpage burrowed his way over the line then Callum Hall broke clear after a strong run to give The Atoms a 16 - 4 lead.
Lancaster University pressurised The Atoms line as half time approached and after their third set of six they scored wide out on the right to take the half time score to 16 - 8 to The Atoms.
Dan Helme broke away to post his second try shortly after the re-start before strong running from the uni's front row was rewarded with their third try close to the ruck.
Another Dan Helme clean break and offload in the tackle allowed Kieron Sharples to swan dive his way over the line and take the Atoms into a 28 - 12 lead. The physicality of the Atoms forwards in particular Curtis Lacey and Joe Harrison was starting to leave its mark and the speed of the outside backs began to benefit most.
Speedy centre Michael Forrest took a pass directly from a scrum 10 yards from his own line and set off on a 90 yard run up field ending under the Uni's posts for an outstanding individual score.
The Atoms were now trying to play with more width and winger Gavin Winder placed an excellent cross field into the path of hooker Matty Humpage who scored his 2nd of the contest.
Ollie Murray was making his debut in The Atoms centre and he showed up well in all facets of play. He made a clean break only to be felled 10 metres short from the line by a good full back tackle. He regained his feet quickly and from the next play hard working prop forward Dan Rodriguez picked his gap and forced his way over to the left of the posts. Michael Forrest slotted over his 7th conversion from 8 attempts.
At no stage could the uni side be shaken off and they finished strongly scoring 2 trys in the final minutes to leave the score at 46 - 22 in The Atoms favour in a thoroughly entertaining game.
