North West Mens Entry League
The Atoms Young guns travelled to Blackpool Stanley for a Friday night game. The two local rivals have not faced each other for nearly 5 seasons as Stanley have been rebuilding through their junior set up.
The Atoms team performance was key to this impressive victory but individually there were some stand out players. Stand Off Jack Lawton helped himself to 22 points from a hat trick of tries and 5 successful goal kicks. Centre Ollie Murray too bagged himself a first half hat trick and new front rower Jon Hobbs continues to improve with every outing.
The lack of match practice was evident for the sea-siders right from the kick off as the Atoms Youngsters came out firing. The Atoms were 8 nil up within the opening 10 mins as firstly Dan Rodriguez was held up short of the line then the ball was transferred quickly to the left edge were Ollie Murray finished off close to the corner flag. The dangerous running centre made it 2 tries after a Chapman kick had forced a goal line drop out and Lawton found him with a well directed pass.
The lively Josh Whyke was playing at hooker and he spotted a gap close to the ruck diving over to score the Atoms third try making it 14 points to nil. The Atoms pack had total control of the middle ground which was creating space out wide and the extra yard of pace of Jack lawton brought him his first try of the afternoon finishing off from long range.
Impressive newcomer Simon Wilson got a great offload away in the tackle and strong running centre Brad Wheatman scored his second try in as many Atoms performances.
Ollie Murray completed his Hat trick before the break taking the Atoms to 30 points in a move orchestrated by young pivot Mitchell Chapman.
The Half time break probably came at the wrong time as far as the Atoms were concerned as they seemed to loose the momentum of the first period. This was the only invitation that Stanley needed as they put some concerted pressure on the Atoms line. The persistence paid off as their scrum half fired out an excellent pass to send the left centre over for their only score.
The Atoms got this scrappy period out of their system as replacement Dan Gio broke the line from half way and was supported by Dan Rodriguez who took the pass before offloading back to Gio who placed the ball over the line. Control was resumed as the returning Callum Hall made a tackle burst and finished off under the posts. Inexperienced wingers Luke Charlson and Darryl Hardman both showed up well as they came looking for work.
The final two Atoms tries were a combination of Dan Helme setting up Jack Lawton to score, one from an accurate pass out of the back and the other from a well placed kick that brought up Lawton's hat trick and the half century of points for the Atoms young guns.
