Victory against Waterhead
North West Counties Division 3
Heysham Atoms 50 points
Waterhead (Oldham) 16 points
The Atoms progressed through to the second round of the Lancashire Cup with a comprehensive victory against Waterhead from Oldham. The Atoms posted 9 tries in this confidence boosting performance and scoring 50 points for the first time this season. They didn't have things all their own way and it took a while to gain control but once they did it was one way traffic toward the Waterhead try line.
The Atoms made their intentions quite clear straight from the kick off spinning the ball wide at every opportunity. At times they were a little reckless but try scoring went tit for tat in the opening quarter with Liam Hall forcing his way over sandwiched between 2 Waterhead tries that were down to poor Atoms defending. the Atoms regained the inititiative and the lead when Mark Walker made a clean break being halted 5 yards from the line. He managed to work his arms free off loading the ball to the supporting Andy Helme who went over the white wash close to the right hand post.
Loose forward Mark Walker showed he could score tries as well as create them scoring The Atoms 4th try of the afternoon. A couple of The Atoms unsung heroes had their efforts rewarded in the man of the match placing as Jake Harrioson and full back Simon Middlehurst had outstanding games making huge yards on kick returns. Waterhead made the game interesting scoring first in the second half but it was long before the rampant Atoms gained control. Mark Walker and Liam Hall both registered their second tries of the game showing they certainly know their way to the try line. Callam Hall made a real impact from the bench proving very difficult to knock over constantly spinning out of tackles and terrorising the Oldham defenders.
Waterheads tired defenders were struggling to contain the enthusiastic Atoms as they found more and more gaps. Hooker Mike Marin benefited most virtually opening them up at will down the middle of the ruck. Stand off Billy Livingstone scored from a quality Atoms shift play before centre Stuart Lacey found a way to the try line cutting back against the sliding defenders. The final Atoms score was deservedly left for Mike Marin, sprinting away from the cover to take The Atoms to the half century mark. Billy Livingstone made it 7 from 9 attempts at goal for a personal points tally of 18 points.
