Atoms winning run comes to an end

KUKRI NORTH WEST COUNTIES DIVISION THREE
HEYSHAM ATOMS 4 POINTS
VS
SPRING VIEW 34 POINTS

The Atoms travelled to Wigan to take on the unbeaten league leaders Spring View. This c rack Wigan outfit have only been conceding an average of seven points a game so The Atoms knew they were in for a tough afternoon. That afternoon got tougher as the two late withdrawals meant The Atoms travelled with only 2 subs. As luck would have it both subs were used in the first 5 minutes as two injuries to the forwards came almost simultaneously.

This adversity didn't seem to affect The Atoms too much as they started the brighter of the two teams. An excellent first set was finished off in the best way possible as Billy Livingstone put The Atoms in front with an outstanding individual score. He chipped and chased on the last , picking up his own kick on the move and outpacing the oncoming defenders winning the race to the line.

The Atoms lost their way a little after a promising start and felt a little aggrieved to be on the end of a series of penalties. These penalties gave Spring View easy yardage and ultimately were able to take two quick score and a 10 - 4 lead.

The Atoms centre pairing of Crookall and Lacey ran well on the edges of the ruck but strong defending prevented their progress.

Callum Hall is a nuisance to all opposition players as he gets in their faces and puts real pressure on the ball carriers. Craig Dixon was leading from the front like any good captain and Shane Weed was putting in a fine defensive stint.

A kick and chase out of The Atoms 20m area didn't come off and Spring View took full advantage scoring under the posts for the second time in the contest.

HALF TIME Atoms 4 - 16 Spring View

Having used their compliment of replacements The Atoms were more than happy to get to the break to rest and re-group.

From the restart Callum Hall made a fine break which had proved elusive to The Atoms players in the first period. The Atoms line was being tested severely and only some determined defending kept the Spring View runners from adding to their score. Craig Dixon brought off a try saving one on one tackle but the petrol tank was beginning to get drained. Spring View's full back and loose forward were doing most of the damage giving their hooker some quality ball to distribute.

The Atoms had soaked up so much pressure that the floodgates looked like they might be opening . Two long range scores both scored by the loose forward took the Wigan side to the 30 point mark.
The Atoms found some energy reserves to call upon and the next 15 mins was all The Atoms. They forced 2 goal line drop outs with excellent defending and Billy Livingstone almost finished where he started only being stopped a yard from the line. The Atoms couldn't penetrate the best defense in the league and the chance had gone.

Fittingly Spring View finished the scoring as weak defending allowed them in down the middle of the park.
