Grand Final Weekend

The Atoms were without a game on Saturday due to the Grand Final at Old Trafford between St. Helens and Leeds Rhinos.  This week they are on their travels again to Widnes to take on West Bank Swan.  Last Season the Swan were promoted as Champions only dropping three points during the league season.  One of those points was at the Trimpell were the Atoms put up one of their best performances of the season in a twelve all draw.  On the day the Atoms performed to their full potential with hooker Gary Lithgow having an outstanding game scoring two tries as well as picking up the man of the match award.

The inspirational Atoms captain is just starting to hit the type of form he produced last season as an improving Atoms side hope to maintain their resurgance and get their season going with a win.  The Swan have had a steady start to Division Three winning three of their five games so far this term.  One stat that jumps out from looking at the League table is that the Swan, although lying fifth in the table, have the best defensive record of all the clubs, only conceeding forty-eight points in five games.  When you put this stat together with the fact that they can call on the services of the quality of ex-Great Britain international Bobby Goulding then for the Atoms to get something out of this game will be a fantastic boost to the rest of the season - something they are very capable of.  On the selection side it is hoped that Sean Weed, Greg Sykes, Mark Walker and Lee Harvey will all be availiable for selection after missing the Blackpool Scorpions clash as the competition for places begins to hot up.

Regards,

Andy Helme
