Helmey's Thoughts

Heysham Atoms' game against Waterhead (Oldham) was prematurely called off on Friday morning (waterlogged pitch) giving the Atoms their second free Saturday in succession .This has been a little frustrating as the Atoms have built up some real momentum winning five games on the run. Coach Dave Crow has been more than pleased that the young, new look side has gelled so quickly in the season.

The move to division four has certainly boosted everyone's confidence with the young members of the squad playing in a side that now has the self belief that had been missing in the last couple of seasons.

New captain Gavin Helliwell has done a fantastic job so far instilling that much needed discipline that successful teams require. Heavyweight points scorer Andy Garnett has picked up where he left of last season by notching 7 tries and 25 goals in his 7 appearances so far. Dave McVernon has also scored 7 tries but both trail the young in form loose forward Russell Birkett who has crossed the white wash on 9 occasions.

New faces Matt craven and Scott Telford have strengthened the back line no end, as this was an area for concern before the season started. Steve Jackson and Gav Winder gain valuable experience with each game played giving great support as the Atoms' last line of defence.

The pack has been able to gain the upper hand in most matches so far this season which has laid an excellent platform for the rest of the team. The improved fitness regime undertaken in the off season has certainly paid off so far.

Oliver Austin has joined the squad and although only 17, he has made 4 appearances from the bench and is keeping his place, repaying the faith put in by the coaching staff.

The begining of the season has so far been virtually all positives but some testing games lie just round the corner namely Ince Rose Bridge and Leigh East, both away from home. The Atoms need to enter these games full of confidence but be very wary that only hard work will bring them the results they desire.

On Saturday we play Eccleston Lions (away) in the North West counties bowl, and this will give us the chance to give some other squad members game.
