The View From The Axe

Two more matches under our belts, two more defeats. Excuses? We could find them if we wanted to - the atrocious weather for last week's midweek fixture at Bolton or perhaps some dodgy refereeing decisions at Liverpool. But in reality there are no excuses. Both of our latest defeats - a 14-6 reverse at Bolton and 38-10 beating in Liverpool - we can only blame ourselves for.

The Bolton match was played in weather that was more akin to winter rugby, which vastly reduced the skill levels in the game to simple rugby. Alas, it should have. Bolton were quicker to adapt to the conditions and scored an early try, taking a lead which they never lost. Dave McVernon used his experience to slide over, but it was too little, too late to overcome the experienced Bolton team, which included no fewer than three current pro-RL players. Liam Hall picked up the RK Fitness man-of-the match award with another awesome display in the front row.

Lady Luck completely deserted the club for the Liverpool fixture at the weekend, if indeed she has ever been with us. The day started with the coach having a flat battery, with the hastily arranged cavalcade of cars reducing our pre-match warm-up to a mere 15 minutes. I had to withdraw from the squad early in the day after suffering a back injury whilst two other key players were unable to play due to work commitments.

The Liverpool club had done their homework on Lancaster, and must have been rubbing their hands with glee when they realised several of the Lancaster players identified in the programme as 'ones to watch' were not in fact playing.

With the club giving debuts to several new players, the odds against our disjointed side were stacked high. However, some outstanding individual performances meant the game was still there for the taking at half time, with only 2 points separating the sides. Steve Bowman had a great game on his debut, Ben Burns again showed his class, Si Ledwick made a number of breaks out on the wing, Liam Hall bullocked his way through defences all afternoon, but pick of the bunch was Shaun Humphreys who had an excellent first half with a number of penetrating runs. Injuries and a couple of questionable decisions saw the second half fall away in a disappointing fashion.

Lancaster entertains Blackpool this weekend, a derby fixture that will no doubt bring out the passion in players and spectators alike. So far this season we have put in some excellent halves of rugby, but not quite managed it for the full 80 minutes. When we do, some team somewhere is going to discover just what this Lancaster team is capable of. We are all hoping that team will be the Sea Eagles on Saturday.
