The View From The Axe

Rugby League is a cruel sport; the rules decree that a tired team conceding a try then has to defend another set of tackles as the defending team restarts play from kick-off.

On Saturday once again we fell into this trap of not being able to keep our opponents from scoring in consecutive sets of six, conceding a disastrous avalanche of points in a tiring short spell towards the end of the first half.

We showed great spirit in the second half to score 22 unanswered points, but to be fair Bolton had already scored enough points to ensure their victory and at this stage were probably cruising, safe in the knowledge the hard work had already been done.

As one would expect, the mood in the changing room after Friday's match was one of great despondency, after another disappointing league defeat.

Lets not dwell on the negatives though. In-form prop Liam Hall had another outstanding game, whilst on the other side of the pack Dave McVernon terrorised the Bolton defence with his usual barnstorming runs. Phil Watson slotted straight into the team and walked off with a try and the RK Fitness Man of the Match award - not a bad debut!

This Saturday we are away at Chester Wolves, who lie second in the table. We know we can score points against Chester. Earlier this season at Giant Axe we put 28 past them, dominating the second half in a match that followed a similar pattern to Saturday's against Bolton.

If however, we are to come away with the points from Chester, then the fire in the Lancaster belly needs to show itself in the first half whilst the game is competitive, rather than when the game has already been lost.
