Ladies Section
The
Heysham Atoms Ladies Section was formed in the 1999/2000 season after
a friendly match between the Lancaster Branch of the Wigan Supporters
Club against their counterparts from Wigan. In their first season friendlies
were played regularly throughout the season as the squad became established
under coaches Carl Parr and Mike Doherty. The highlight of the season,
and of any season, was an invitation to play at the JJB Stadium at Wigan
in an exhibition game at half time during Wigan V's Castleford Super League
Game.
The next season saw entry to the W.A.R.L.A. National League Structure.
Although finding it demanding against some quality opposition they fulfilled
every fixture and began to compete in every game.
Brian
Gregory took over the coaching reigns at the start of last season and
with a re-structuring of leagues this meant that the Atoms Ladies had
to play against teams from Sheffield, Wakefield and York. This stretched
the Club resources to the full but again the section came out stronger.
This year the Atoms Ladies have joined forces with Pendle Lions to boost
the numbers in the squad and the early indications are this will be a
very favourable partnership. The Ladies can look forward to the season
with great anticipation and if the training sessions are anything to go
by there is plenty of enthusiasm for the forthcoming fixtures.
